Planning HVAC for an Atlanta Home Renovation? Start Before the Walls Close

A renovation changes more than a floor plan. Removing walls, finishing a basement, or adding a bedroom can change how your Atlanta home's heating and cooling system needs to operate. Waiting until the drywall is finished can make necessary HVAC corrections more disruptive.

Bring the heating and cooling plan into the project while the layout is still flexible.

Identify what the project changes

A new room adds space to condition, but square footage is only part of the calculation. Window area, insulation, ceiling height, and exposure also affect heating and cooling demand. An open floor plan can change air movement and the conditions around the thermostat.

Share drawings and proposed construction details with your HVAC contractor. Include areas that will become living space and rooms that will have doors added or removed.

Plan supply and return airflow together

Adding a supply vent does not guarantee a comfortable room. Air also needs a suitable return path. Duct routes must fit the structure without crushing flexible ducts or creating inaccessible connections.

Discuss register locations before cabinetry, built-ins, and furniture layouts are finalized. A well-placed grille becomes less effective when a new cabinet blocks it.

Decide whether existing equipment can serve the space

An existing system may have enough capacity, too little capacity, or distribution problems unrelated to its size. A load calculation and duct evaluation help separate those possibilities.

For an addition or isolated space, ask whether extending the existing system or using separate equipment is more appropriate. The comparison should include installation requirements, controls, maintenance access, and how the room will be used.

Leave room for service

Equipment, filters, drains, and shutoffs need accessible service space after construction. Avoid designing permanent finishes around components that must be inspected or replaced.
