A longer heating cycle does not automatically mean a heat pump is failing. For Commerce homeowners, the more useful question is whether the system maintains a comfortable indoor temperature and operates as designed.
Outdoor conditions, the home's heat loss, and the equipment's controls all affect runtime. Some variable-capacity systems are designed to run for extended periods at lower output.
Compare comfort with runtime
Note the outdoor conditions, thermostat setting, and actual indoor temperature. A system that runs longer while maintaining its setting is a different concern from one that runs continuously while the house gets colder.
Also check whether the problem began suddenly. A major change without a matching change in weather or thermostat use deserves investigation.
Check the basics safely
Inspect the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions and keep indoor returns clear. From a safe distance, look for leaves or other loose debris obstructing the outdoor unit. Do not open equipment panels or chip ice from the coil.
Confirm that the thermostat is in its intended heating mode. If emergency heat was selected accidentally, have the operating instructions reviewed before changing settings you do not understand.
What requires professional testing
Poor airflow, duct problems, controls, refrigerant-related faults, and backup-heat operation can all affect heating performance. A technician needs measurements to separate those possibilities.
Tell the technician whether auxiliary heat appears frequently, whether the outdoor unit operates, and whether your electricity use changed substantially. These observations help, but none alone identifies the failed component.
Avoid choosing replacement by runtime alone
Long cycles are not enough to justify replacing equipment. If replacement is being considered, evaluate heating capacity, duct condition, and the home's load rather than assuming the next unit should be larger.
