Choosing replacement heating equipment for an Athens home starts with more than comparing two price tags. A heat pump, a furnace, and a dual-fuel system operate differently. The right choice depends on your home's needs, available utilities, and the work required for a complete installation.
Understand what each system does
A heat pump moves heat between the home and outdoor air and can provide both heating and cooling. A furnace supplies heat, while separate cooling equipment typically handles summer comfort. A dual-fuel arrangement combines a heat pump with a furnace and uses controls to coordinate their operation.
None of these descriptions establishes which option will cost less to operate in your house. That requires a comparison using your energy rates, equipment performance, and expected heating demand.
Ask about the complete installation
Request the model numbers and scope of work for each proposal. Important questions include whether the quote covers electrical changes, thermostat compatibility, duct corrections, permits where required, and system startup testing.
For a heat pump, ask how supplemental heating will work. For a furnace, ask about venting and fuel requirements. Existing connections do not automatically mean the new equipment can use them without modification.
Size for the home as it is today
New windows, added insulation, an addition, or previous duct changes may have altered the home's needs. A replacement should be selected using an appropriate load calculation and equipment selection process, rather than copying the old unit's capacity.
Have the duct system evaluated too. New equipment cannot fully solve distribution problems caused by damaged or inadequate ducts.
Compare warranty terms in writing
Review parts coverage, labor coverage, registration requirements, and maintenance obligations separately. A long warranty headline does not explain every potential repair cost.
