Why Does My Thermostat Say AUX Heat? A Monroe Homeowner's Guide

If your thermostat suddenly displays "AUX," you may wonder whether your heat pump is failing—or whether your next electric bill will be unusually high.

Auxiliary heat is supplemental heating that can help a heat pump meet demand. Seeing the indicator occasionally does not, by itself, diagnose a problem. What matters is when it appears, how long it runs, and whether your Monroe home stays comfortable.

What Does Auxiliary Heat Do?

A heat pump moves heat into your home. Supplemental heat can assist when the main system needs help. Some systems use electric resistance heating for that support; other equipment arrangements differ.

Your thermostat settings, equipment configuration, and outdoor conditions influence operation. The meaning of a particular display should be checked against the instructions for your system.

Occasional AUX Heat Can Be Expected

Supplemental heating may operate during colder conditions or while the outdoor unit completes a defrost cycle. A large increase in the thermostat setting can also call for additional heat on some systems.

Avoid switching modes repeatedly to make the indicator disappear. Record the circumstances instead: the temperature setting, approximate outdoor conditions, and whether the house is reaching the requested temperature.

When Should You Schedule Service?

Arrange an inspection if auxiliary heat seems to run much more than it used to, the house remains cold, or energy use rises unexpectedly. Extended operation deserves attention, especially when the outdoor unit appears inactive or heavily iced over.

Those observations do not prove that a specific part has failed. A technician needs to evaluate the system before recommending a repair.

AUX Heat and Emergency Heat Are Different

Auxiliary heat is generally called automatically by the controls. An Emergency Heat setting, where provided, is a separate operating mode. Follow the manufacturer's guidance and ask your technician when that mode should be used.

Turning on Emergency Heat simply because the weather feels cold can change how the system operates. It should not become a substitute for diagnosing a comfort problem.

What Information Helps Your Technician?

Take a photo of the thermostat display and note whether the issue is constant or intermittent. Mention recent thermostat changes, service work, power interruptions, or unusual sounds.

If you have utility usage records, compare energy consumption rather than only the dollar amount. Rates and billing-period lengths can change, so a larger bill alone does not establish an equipment fault.

Ask the technician to explain whether the system is operating as designed, what tests support the findings, and which options address the problem.
