Rather they transfer existing heat into your home or, when the weather is warm, back out of your home with a simple reversal of the operation. Despite the differences in the ways that they operate, your heat pump is very similar to a traditional air conditioning unit. It has a compressor, for example, as well as a coil and refrigerant. Your heat pump also has a reversing valve and two bypass valves which allow it both heat and cool your home.

When your heat pump is in the heating mode the reversing valve sends compressed refrigerant to the inner coil, making this inner coil act as a condenser which releases the heat. This heated air is then sent into your home. The outer coil collects the heat for transfer into your home from the air outside, making that coil function as the evaporator.

This differs from the cooling mode, in which refrigerant is sent to the outer coil, where it is cooled and condensed to liquid. Heat is removed from the refrigerant, and it is sent to the inner coil. Air blowing across the coil has the heat removed from it, and cooled air sent into your home.

The reversal of the flow of refrigerant is key in allowing the heat pump to both heat and cool your home. All the while only a small amount of electricity is used in the heat transfer process that allows your heat pump to achieve this. By using the existing heat outside to warm your home, rather than consuming gas, oil or electricity to create that heat, heat pumps are able to function much more efficiently than many other home heating systems.
